ILLUSTRATIONS

This is an on-going project to showcase current trends in design, illustration and typography. Six Black Pens asked some leading illustrators, both local and international, to submit a recent piece of work that they’re proud of, and the thinking behind it. The following examples show some of the different trends among illustrators working today.

Christopher Nielsen (AUS)

“Recently I did this rebranding job for Bondi institution,
'The One That Got Away'. The majority of my work is
editorial illustration so it was nice do something different,
that would work on a variety of scales (no pun intended).”

“I have done this ad for the Museum of Modern Art,
that I am very happy with. The assignment was to
create a detailed illustration that shows all the
different things that one can do when visiting the Museum.
I am a great admirer of modern art, and I wanted to pay
homage and show a light-hearted approach to all the
masterpieces at the same time.”

Dan Page

Dan Page (CAN)

This is one of the latest assignments I did for
Time Magazine. I like to focus on smart ideas,
but in the end it has to be an attractive image considering
colour, composition, texture, lines and shapes.
This was about an article discussing how to rebuild/
reorganize your retirement portfolio.”

Gregory Roberts

Gregory Roberts (AUS)

“I like this illustration because, well I have a bit of a thing
for bulls and the minotaur has always been a favourite
mythic figure. Also nice to see strong emotional characters
in illustrations rather than the proliferation of little birdies
and butterflies that abound for unknown reasons.”

"This image is taken from an illustrated book version
of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Hopefully, the book will create some awareness of this Declaration.“

“I really like the the different layers in this graphic,
from flow chart to deep space. All in cyan too! ”
